Critical Thinking: Developing Critical Thinking Skills

In order to study successful, it is very important to develop certain key skills concerning reading, writing and even thinking. Developing critical thinking skills is very important for any student. Studying is not simply about memorizing facts for the purpose of examinations but it is mainly about understanding the subject of your study – as a result developing critical thinking skills is absolutely essential for any student.

Developing Critical Thinking

The most important thing to know is that you must have an open mind. The whole point of critical thinking is to develop open mindedness and take a good look at the subject of your study. You must learn to view it from every possible angle. So for example, if you are studying Physics and need to learn Newton’s laws, you must understand it too. Yes, you might need to learn it word for word for the purposes of your examination but it is also very important that you understand the principles of Newton’s theories and exactly what he was trying to say. This way, just in case you forget the actual words, you will still have an understanding of Newton’s laws and be able to explain it when necessary.

How To Develop Critical Thinking Skills

In order to develop critical thinking skills, you must strategize right. The following critical thinking strategies will come in handy when studying or learning something new.

  • Read your material a few times to fully understand your subject matter and the facts of the subject.
  • If necessary, take some notes and jot down the important facts such as dates, names, numbers, subject related jargon etc so you know what is important and what is not.
  • Once you have these facts, you need to reorganize them and arrange them in a pattern that does not just look like a textbook but is easy for you to understand.
  • While you are sorting through these facts, it is important you keep your own personal feelings, beliefs and judgments aside and not let it influence your understanding of the subject matter. While studying something scientific, this might not happen but say you are studying something like literature or psychology, it is important to be open minded and understand a work from every possible angle.
  • While studying it is important to do lots of outside reading and understand other people’s opinions on the subject matter. However, while you must consider expert opinions, be wary not to be tied down to just one opinion or point of view about your subject. You must be able to develop critical thinking by forming your own opinions and point of view and understanding of the subject matter.
  • Finally, when putting your critical thinking to the final test – you must be able to apply your learning and understanding to explain the subject matter, especially for the purposes of an examination. You need to assess your subject of study, think critically, analyze and apply your learning to it.
  • You must synthesize all your reading, your study matter and your own understanding to develop a coherent unified evaluation.

Developing critical thinking skills is important to explain to prove to your teachers that you have not merely memorized the facts but fully understood the contents of your course. By critically thinking about your study matter, you will gain knowledge that is likely to last you for life.
